Trader Joe’s 5 Cheese Greek Spiral

Trader Joe’s had me at “5 cheese” with this one! I’m a sucker for cheese, what can I say? And all of that stuffed into a flaky filo dough pastry, what’s not to love? Keep reading for the full review and exclusive cart rating!

What is Trader Joe’s 5 Cheese Greek Spiral?

The 5 cheeses that consist of this Greek Spiral are:

  • Gouda, which is a sweet and creamy yellow cow’s milk cheese.
  • Kasseri, which is a medium-hard yellow cheese made from sheep’s milk.
  • Kefalotyri, which is a hard, salty white cheese made from sheep’s or goat’s milk.
  • Semi-hard Cheese
  • Blue Cheese, which is made with cultures of the mold Penicillium, giving it a distinct smell and appearance.

The filo dough is what holds all 5 cheeses together in this dish. Filo is very thin unleavened dough used for making pastries. Filo based pasties are made by layering many sheets of the dough, brushed with oil or butter, and then baked.

The greek “pie” cheese spiral is then baked, cut, and traditionally served as an appetizer or an entree. Each layer is flaky, buttery and of course so cheesy!

Looking at the picture above, I was a little skeptical as to what this was going to come out looking like. The frozen filo greek spiral was plain, boring and unappetizing looking. I crossed my fingers as I put it into the oven and said a little prayer.

Where In the Store?

This 5 Cheese Greek Spiral was located in Trader Joe’s frozen aisle section. It was in the freezer case with all of their other appetizer items.

In that frozen appetizer case were a variety of other cuisines, such as Indian, Mexican, Asian, Italian and French! Here are some of Trader Joe’s other appetizers that we’ve reviewed so far! Click the links to read all about them!

How to Serve Trader Joe’s 5 Cheese Greek Spiral

I served this 5 Cheese Greek Spiral to some dinner guests as an appetizer. It went over SO WELL with everyone! They kept asking “What is this?”, “Where did you find something like this?”

Cooking this cheesy spiral was so easy. I tore open the package, and put it onto a baking sheet. I didn’t have to brush it with butter or oil. All I had to do was preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, and bake it for 30-35 minutes. I did turn it in the oven halfway through cooking time, to ensure an even cook.

When I popped it into the oven and said my little prayer, I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. After baking then filo spiral, I let it sit for about 5 minutes to cool down before cutting into it.

I placed it onto a cutting board and cut the spiral like a pizza pie, into 8 perfect little slices. It actually worked out great because we had 8 guests for dinner.

Another way to serve this Greek “pie” would be to break the spirals and let people eat it that way. Instead of serving it in the shape of a pizza pie, you could break apart the pieces into a long “rope” and then cut those into smaller pieces.

You could pair this with a salad to make it a full meal, or just enjoy it as an appetizer. It really is the perfect appetizer being that it’s hot, crispy, crunchy and cheesy! The perfect way to start off any dinner party.

From the picture above, you can see each ring is FILLED with the 5 different cheeses, it was almost oozing out of the filo!

The Review

I really, really, really enjoyed this 5 Cheese Greek Spiral, and so did all of my guests. The appetizer was gone in a matter of minutes! I should have cut the pieces smaller, so we could have had seconds, but nobody seemed to mind.

Each filo layer was buttery, crispy and so delicious. It went into the oven looking like the most boring appetizer you could possibly present to your guests, and it came out of the oven looking like a million bucks! You can’t ask for better than that!

When I cut into the filo, it crumbled and broke apart just how it’s supposed to. Filo dough is so thin and delicate and its basically meant to melt in your mouth. The combination of the salty and creamy cheeses with the thin buttery filo dough was out of this world.

Each ring of filo was packed with the different types of cheeses. The variety of the hard, medium and soft cheeses was a winning combination. The saltiness from each of the cheeses paired so well with the somewhat plain filo dough.

The dish really speaks for itself. It’s such a simple and easy appetizer to throw together that you and your guests will love!

Buy It Again?

On my next trip to Trader Joe’s I will definitely be purchasing this 5 Cheese Greek Spiral again, without a doubt. To be honest, I’ll probably buy two of them, it was that good.

I loved that it was so easy, just throw it in the oven and let it do its thing! It crisped up so well, and the cheeses on the inside got all hot and gooey.

Next time I’m asked to bring a starter or appetizer to a party, I’m definitely going to bring this. It was such a hit and I know it will be for you too!
