What are these Buffalo Chicken Poppers?

These Poppers are crispy, spicy little pocket appetizers stuffed with buffalo chicken and melty cheese. The Poppers look like they’re wrapped in puff pastry but it’s actually phyllo dough!

Phyllo is similar to puff pastry with its abundance of delicate, flaky layers but the dough layers are individually stacked on top of each other with a layer of melted butter brushed on between each layer. It tends to be a little less calorie-laden than puff pastry, if that matters at all to you.

And while snacks called “poppers” are known to be baked hot peppers stuffed with cream cheese or cheddar cheese, these Buffalo Chicken Poppers are nothing like traditional poppers. They’re actually more like the Buffalo Chicken Egg Rolls I made years ago than they are like popper snacks.

Where In the Store?

You can find Buffalo Style Chicken Poppers in the Frozen aisle of Trader Joe’s near the frozen snacks and appetizers.

How to Serve These Buffalo Chicken Poppers

We air fried these popper snacks and they turned out perfectly crispy and browned. I love using the air fryer to make small batches of snacks!

A hand is dipping half of a Trader Joe's Buffalo Chicken Popper into blue cheese dressing. There is a sliced green chive on the dressing. In back of the hand, there is a rectangular plate with more Buffalo Chicken Poppers, a small glass bowl of the dressing, and a pile of baby carrots.

Since we made them for lunch one afternoon, we added some baby carrots to the plate along with some blue cheese dressing for dipping. Ranch dressing would be excellent too if you’re blue cheese-averse!

Since they’re appetizer-sized snacks, they’ll be great for all kinds of parties. The fillo dough shells sort of elevates these snacks from just another buffalo chicken snack to fancy appetizer level in a heartbeat.

And if you’re into making snack boards, these Poppers will make a perfect addition to them as well.

The Review

We LOVED these Buffalo Style Chicken Poppers! Buffalo sauce is known to be a fairly spicy sauce but I found these Poppers to be only a little more than mildly spicy.

Fillo dough can be a tricky ingredient to work with on its own because the unbaked layers are so delicate so I’m all about pre-made appetizers that use fillo dough – all the work is done for me!

The folks at Trader Joe’s love these Poppers too and they’re calling them one of their “Sleeper Hits”. TJ’s recently released a new video about them too but make sure to check out my Shopping Cart Rating below before heading over there!

Buy It Again?

Once in a while, my husband and I like to bake up a bunch of appetizers for dinner. Admittedly, we’re pretty pretty picky about frozen snacky-snacks, and we’ve found that many are just downright terrible.

But we’ll definitely buy these again when we’re in need of some quick, crowd-pleasing appetizers. I hope Trader Joe’s never discontinues these Poppers!!
