What are Trader Joe’s Caramel Sea Salt Baking Chips?

When fall rolled around at Trader Joe’s, this was one of the items that I had been doing my research on and I knew I needed to try.

The little baking chips are slightly salted, sweet and buttery. They’re the size of a regular chocolate chip morsel making them perfect to add into any sweet treat that could use just a little something extra.

I knew I needed to have these as soon as I set my eyes on them. So many possibilities ran through my head on how to use these. Keep reading for some inspiration!

On the back of the package, they give you a recipe for caramel sea salt chip cookies, YUM. I’ll have to try that recommendation with my next bag, because ya know..I might have bought three bags.

Where In the Store?

These baking chips were located on an end aisle with all of the other fall stuff they were advertising for that week. Some other fun items that were on the end cap that week were:

These morsels were also in the baking aisle near the Blondie Bar Baking Mix. Hmmm..they might be on to something with that match up! In the same aisle, across the way are the Better Than Leftovers! Assorted Dog Treats for your beloved furry friends in your life.

How to Serve Trader Joe’s Caramel Sea Salt Baking Chips

This is really an open ended question. These morsels are so versatile they can literally be put into anything.

I mixed them into the batter when I baked the Pumpkin Chocolate Chunk Oatmeal Cookie Mix. A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN. Stay tuned for a review on those cookies coming soon! They are a seasonal item, so I hope you got your hands on a container!

Here are a few other fun ideas to sprinkle these sweet morsels in:

  • Mix into pancake batter.
  • Mix into your favorite cookie recipe.
  • Melt them to make a sauce or glaze.
  • Add into your favorite trail mix.
  • Plunk some into your favorite hot chocolate mix, because the cold weather is approaching us here on the East Coast!
  • Here’s my Trade Secret…Take a handful of these morsels and add about 1/2 Tbsp of Coconut Oil in a microwavable dish. Microwave on high for about 30-45 seconds, stir to combine and BAM, you have homemade Caramel Sea Salt Magic Shell to pour over your favorite ice cream.

The Review

I totally loved these slightly salted, sweet buttery little morsels. They were the perfect addition to the Pumpkin Chocolate Chunk Oatmeal Cookie Mix. I have a few more bags stashed away for a rainy day and I can’t wait to use them in some of the ways I listed above!

The morsels turned so gooey in the fresh chocolate chip cookies, they were just perfect. I really think they would melt very well with whatever you added them into, especially piping hot chocolate! *Drool.*

They were pretty sweet, and did remind me a bit of butterscotch, but more caramel”y” than butterscotch”y” if you know what I mean. The sea salt really helped round out the sweetness of the little baking chip.

Caramel always reminds me of warmth, so I feel like Trader Joe’s really hit the nail in the head when they decide to release these baking bits for the upcoming holiday season. I feel like there are just so many possibilities to use these in, that I’m going to need them to stick around for a while!

Buy It Again?

I will buy these sea salt baking chips again for sure. They are so versatile and so fun to add into your favorite sweet treats. The trip when I initially saw these, I did buy myself three bags (I’m exposing myself, I know) because I didn’t know for sure if they were seasonal or not. So, just to be sure I did stock up!

After doing some research, we are in luck Trader Joe’s fans because they will be available to us all holiday season long!! YAY, no reason to stock pile until probably December! (LOL)
