You might think that using the same word twice in a product’s title means that they’re twice as good, right? We tried, reviewed, and gave Trader Joe’s Crispy Crunchy Crisps the Two Cousins Cart Rating. Read on to see what the heck is up with one of TJ’s newest items!
What are Trader Joe’s Crisp Crunchy Crisps?
NEW ITEM ALERT!
Trader Joe’s introduced these Crisp Crunchy Crisps a couple of weeks ago as one of their newest vegan and gluten free snacks and we wanted to see what the hype was all about.
With a tongue-twister of name, you’d expect a complicated snack but these crisps are pretty straightforward. They’re square, baked, and airy crackers made with pea flour, potato flour, and chickpea flour as their 3 main ingredients.
Just as promised, this new snack is definitely crispy and crunchy!
We’ve loved Trader Joe’s Inner Peas snacks for years – they’re one of Riley’s FAVORITE snacks! – so I was hopeful the new Crisp Crunchy Crisps would be an updated version of those dried peas, but in cracker form.
Keep on reading to see if the new Crisp Crunchy Crisps can hold a candle to Trader Joe’s Inner Peas!
Where In the Store?
You can find Crisp Crunchy Crisps in the chips and snack aisle of Trader Joe’s.
How to Serve Crisp Crunchy Crisps
OK, so right off the bat, you’re going to notice that the Crisp Crunchy Crisps are on the large side so I’m pretty sure these crispy snacks were meant for scooping hummus or another kind of dip. For sure, they’re shaped perfectly and are hefty enough for dipping.
But they’re also reeeally crunchy so I think they’d be fantastic crumbled up on top of a salad or grain bowl, kind of like gluten free croutons.
OR!! Grind a few of the crisps up in the food processor to make gluten free “breadcrumbs” as a breading for chicken or fish, or as a topping for mac and cheese!
I had some high expectations for Trader Joe’s Crisp Crunchy Crisps! But did they live up to my expectations?
I don’t love these snacks. I mean, taste-wise, they’re OK. They do have a slight hint of the pea flour that is similar to the Inner Peas.
Texture-wise, they’re definitely crunchy and crispy, as their name promises. BUT – and this is also a big but – the outside of the crisps also feel a little plasticky. And because of that, they feel just plain weird in your mouth!
To me, they don’t hold up as a comparable snack to Inner Peas. However, Inner Peas are not labeled as gluten free so keep that in mind if you’re looking for a gluten free snack!
With all this said, my snack testing toddler seemed to enjoy the Crisp Crunchy Crisps so there’s that.
As far as my Cart Rating goes – see below! – I was ready to give the Crisp Crunchy Crisps just 1 Cart but since Riley seemed to like them and they were definitely crunchy, I changed my mind. They’re still not even close to the top of our Cart Rating Scale though!
Buy It Again?
These crisps will be a PASS for me in the future.
We don’t follow any specific diets so the fact that they’re a gluten free and vegan snack won’t make me feel compelled to buy them. And anyway, there are loads of different gluten free and vegan snack options available these days if we did follow one or both of those diets.
Better luck next time with a new snack option, Trader Joe’s!
