What are Trader Joe’s Mochi Rice Nuggets?
These little crispy snacks are made from Mochi rice! Mochi is a short, hulled grain glutinous white rice with a very mild yet sweet flavor.
Mochi rice has a very high starch content, so when the rice gets cooked it gets very soft and sticky. This makes it great for using in both sweet and savory dishes. It’s a very versatile ingredient in many Japanese recipes.
Mochi rice is commonly ground into rice cakes, sweets and many other traditional Asian dishes. Here, Trader Joe’s decided that it needed to become a savory snack! WOOHOO!
The rice snacks are compact little nuggets with the BEST CRUNCH. They weren’t exaggerating when they named this little “rock band snack” The Crispy Crunchy Mochi Rice Nuggets! Love it!
Where In the Store?
I found these Mochi Rice Snacks in the frozen aisle of my local Trader Joe’s. They were above the frozen items on the shelves where they sometimes will display an area of cookies, candy or crackers.
If you’ve been to a Trader Joe’s, you all know what shelves I’m talking about! That’s where all the good stuff is!
They were near the Vegan and Gluten Free items, right above the frozen vegetables and Vegan Chicken Patties!
I do have a teeny tiny bit of sad news. They are not discontinued, but on my most recent trip to Trader Joe’s last week I went to buy another bag (or two) of them, and they have a production halt from the manufacturer until at least July 20, 2021.
How to Serve Trader Joe’s Mochi Rice Nuggets
Since these Mochi Rice Nuggets are considered a snack, I just ate them right out of the bag.
There was really no need to dirty a small bowl or plate, or waste a paper towel when quite literally I was SHOVELING them into my mouth.
I really wish I could give you more fun ways to enjoy these crispy snacks, but I think this time, the snack just needs to speak for itself.
Trader Joe’s did just launch a NEW ITEM that are similar to these, but SPICY. They are called Crispy Crunchy Spicy Mochi Rice Nuggets. You bet I picked myself up a bag to tide me over until the originals are back on store shelves. A review on that to come soon!
Here are some of my other favorite crunchy and crispy snacks from Trader Joe’s, Lidl and Aldi! Check them out for yourself!!
- Key Lime Kettle Popcorn from Trader Joe’s
- Trader Joe’s Crispy Peanut Butter filled Milk Chocolate Peanuts
- Chocolatey Chip Dunkers from Aldi
- Lidl’s Dill Pickle Potato Chips
- Organic Banana Chips from Trader Joe’s
As you can see from the picture above, the little rice nuggets are pretty compact, not really “airy” as the package claims. They had a funny shape, all different then the last.
They were incredibly crunchy, and then they turned a bit chewy, but not in a bad way. After you chewed them for a while, they almost just melted away. The texture was interesting, it’s very hard to describe but I enjoyed it A LOT.
They were salty, with a hint of cheesy and sweetness. They were mostly savory though. Again, like the texture, the flavor is hard to describe as well. I’ve only ever had Mochi one other time in my life as a dessert and I did not care for it.
I was skeptical to try these Mochi Rice Nuggets, but hey, that’s why we’re doing this blog right? To try new things and give our fans fun interesting content? BUT OF COURSE!!
They stayed crunchy and crispy the entire time I had them, which wasn’t very long! I ate these pretty quickly considering how skeptical I was in the beginning!
Buy It Again?
I will 100% be buying these crispy Mochi Rice Nugget snacks again.
When I can finally get my hands on a bag I’m definitely going to stock up. I feel like if you’ve shopped at Trader Joe’s for a while now, we all have that ONE item that they’ve discontinued or might have a manufacturing/shipping delay. Or, the dreaded….*SEASONAL ITEM*
How utterly HEARTBREAKING, I know, I’ve been there myself.
The employee at Trader Joe’s promised me that they were not discontinued or a seasonal item, but it was just a hold up with the manufacturing. I guess I’ll just have to wait a few more weeks for my little friends to arrive. As they say, “absence makes the heart grow fonder”.
I loved these, definitely getting a 5 cart out of 5 cart rating from me! Hopefully you can find them at your local Trader Joe’s, so go out and try them for yourself!!
