Trader Joe’s Organic Mediterranean Style Salad Kit

I’m always on the hunt for a new salad to add liven up my lunch routine and recently, I’ve been reaching for healthy-ish salad mixes. Trader Joe’s has a slew of salad mix options but today, we’re talking about the Organic Mediterranean Style Salad Kit. Does it stand up or is it a flop?

What is Trader Joe’s Organic Mediterranean Style Salad Kit?

If you’ve swung your red cart down the veggie and fruit aisle at Trader Joe’s, you know there’s a huge selection of salad kits available. There’s all types of options these days from vegan to spicy to the Asian-inspired Thai peanut and crispy noodle salad, and with all type of greens too: kale, butter lettuce, spring greens, romaine, cabbage, etc.

The Organic Mediterranean Style Salad Kit starts out pretty basic with romaine lettuce and moves on to some of my favorite salad ingredients. Here’s what’s in this salad kit:

  • Romaine lettuce
  • Shredded broccoli stalks
  • Radicchio
  • Celery
  • Seasoned flatbread pieces
  • Feta cheese
  • Sun dried tomatoes
  • Roasted chickpeas
  • Red wine vinaigrette

I’m a total sucker for an easy and healthy lunch to throw together on a busy day and this one hits all the marks. All of the ingredients are organic and the only one that sounds a little different is the xanthum gum. Xanthum gum is a common ingredient these days that’s added to the vinaigrette to help to thicken it.

Speaking of the red wine vinaigrette, what a punch of flavor this dressing gives to the salad! It was one of the salad components that made me choose this salad mix since I rarely make this type of dressing at home.

Where In the Store?

You can find the Organic Mediterranean Style Salad Kit in the refrigerated aisle of Trader Joe’s nestled among the other salad kits and next to the bagged greens.

How to Serve Organic Mediterranean Style Salad Kit

This is a complete salad kit, which means that it doesn’t require anything else to make it a complete and filling meal.

However, you should think of me as the friend in your group who has to fuss with a good thing to make it just a little better.

So, I foraged in my fridge and came out with some perfectly grilled flank steak that we had eaten the night before I made this Mediterranean salad for lunch.

Of course, grilled chicken, leftover roast chicken, grilled shrimp, or baked salmon would also be excellent protein-rich additions to add to this salad in place of steak.

Love a good Greek salad? You can certainly turn this Mediterranean style salad into a full-on Greek salad by adding some Kalamata or black olives, tomatoes, and thinly sliced red onions.

In fact, why don’t you just assemble this salad mix in a pretty bowl and pour then vinaigrette into a pretty little serving pitcher? Then you could take credit for creating this salad on your own. No one would be the wiser!

And by all means, serve this salad as a side dish as well! There’s no Salad Police that exists to tell you that a salad mix like this one has to be served as a main course salad.

The Review

I’ll be blunt here and say that I’m a really big fan of this Mediterranean Style Salad Kit! I have strong feelings about what makes a great salad and this one totally does it for me.

First things first: A great salad has to have great flavor. The red wine vinaigrette included in this kit is a delicious one. The dressing flavors are well-balanced and as I said earlier, it brings a bright “punch” to the salad.

The salty feta really complements the acidity of the vinaigrette and adds another dimension of flavor to the salad.

Secondly, my ideal salad needs to have a variety of textures. I loathe a soft, mushy salad!

This one adds a broccoli slaw to the romaine and radicchio, and includes not only crunchy roasted chickpeas, but crispy flatbread strips as well.

Roasted chickpeas are one of my absolute favorite salad toppers since they not only add a whole lot of crackle to a salad, but they add a good bit of fiber and protein as well. I first used them to top my baked falafel farro bowls and haven’t looked back since!

The soft crumbles of feta work just right with all the crunch going on and it gives your mouth a break from chomping so much on the chickpeas and flatbread strips when needed.

This salad is flavor and textural heaven to me!

Buy It Again?

I absolutely love this Organic Mediterranean Style Salad Kit so you can be sure that I’ll be buying it again!

I basically never leave Trader Joe’s without a bagged salad kit in my cart so once I finish making my way through the huge selection to try them all, this one will definitely be making another appearance!
